With a love for music and technology, the
decision to pursue a career in electronic music was not too difficult.
Applying it in a traditional society, however, was the challenge.
Completing high school, Uncuoglu started working at CD
LAND, importing foreign LPs and the first CDs to Istanbul.
Collecting a vast knowledge of the current dance music, he was
approached with offers to DJ at private parties. In 1987, he began
accepting the offers, and started his DJ'ing career. Soon his first
residency, at Bodrum Hadigari, followed.
Uncuoglu's
career took a professional turn when his success at Hadigari
caught the attention of the owner of Pasha Istanbul and he was
immediately recruited to the club. Before long, his name became
simultaneous with Pasha as he transformed the club's music scene
to match that of the best in Europe.
His ever-increasing urge to become a professional DJ and producer, took
Uncuoglu to what was then the heart of electronic music, London.
During the day, he studied sound engineering and production at
London's Media Productions. At night, he conducted field
research in London's legendary clubs. While there; he met international
producers including Marshall Jefferson (Chicago) and
BAM BAM (Chicago) and worked as their engineers at various studios.
It was not long before he was DJ'ing in exclusive parties and local
clubs. Upon his return to Istanbul in 1994, he embarked upon multiple
projects. Consequently, he was recruited as the resident DJ at Club
2019, Istanbul's first and legendary underground club.
Simultaneously, Uncuoglu embarked on his most memorable project,
the co-founding of Radio 2019, the first electronic music radio
station in Turkey. Thus, the first steps towards placing Istanbul on
club culture's international map were taken.
Since then, Murat Uncuoglu has founded MiracleWorkz, with
his composer/singer associate Aytekin Kurt. Together they have
created remixes for Turkey's top artists such as Tarkan, Sertap
Erener, Levent Yuksel, and many more.
Uncuoglu
has
been the resident DJ at 7th House and Switch, the top two clubs
in Istanbul, not to mention being host DJs Max Graham, Dave Seaman,
Lemon8, Kasey Taylor, Andy Jarod, Stewart Rowell, Breeder
Having attained national stardom and respect by both his fans and
colleagues, Murat Uncuoglu has turned his attention to the
international music scene.

Thank you for your time. First can we have a short biography on you?
Sure,
Long time ago I started collecting records, so my friends insisted on
inviting me to their parties. At the beginning, I wasn’t much serious
about the job, but after a while I found my self carrying records to
different parties & in one of them, there was a guy offering me to play
as a warm up DJ at his club & I accepted the job & after that I
seriously started DJing which is now about 15 years & at the same time I
decided to learn more about of Electronic music , so I continued my way
in high education on digital studio production in London for about 3 or
4 years & after my graduation I came back to Turkey starting my
professional carrier in a studio leading me to continue in my own. Now
I’m doing lots of productions as many remixes of famous Pop stars of
turkey such as: "Tarkan" & by the side producing my own music
that is Electronic joined by some partners. We also produce sound tracks
for a TV series which is very popular in Turkey.
Can
we know more about the style of your music & the genre you work
on?
Previously, I used to play vinyl records and after a time I changed my
style using CDs & now at the moment I do live production using soft
wares with its related controller equipment & my usual mixing software
is "Abletonlive". Many people ask me about the satisfaction of
using laptops & my answer is: the way of music performance doesn’t
matter; the main thing is now to make your audience satisfied. As I said
I prefer using - ableton live, because you're free to do anything during
your mix & that’s the new generation I believe in & also gives me the
power of
improvising.
What do you think about the upgrades of the music fans & the way they
listen & follow electronic music?
I
believe lots of things has been changed, for example, ten years ago,
there was no fast internet services so they didn’t have the chance to
get the latest updates of music, but know every body has the chance to
surf the net & download the tracks they are looking for & they got very
open minded in music with the point of growing up fast. We also have
many people who don’t know much of this music but there are much
Individual opportunities they have, choosing what they like or not & can
test their tastes in any
conditions.
I
see people here, who are much updated in music & have a professional
vision; do you have any reasons for that?
Because we have our own traditional music that is highly graded, so
definitely our people would have a great vision of understanding
professional music. So it makes them dig through the style & find the
best & compare the qualities. The important thing is they care about the
melodies & vocals in electronic music & I think it originally comes from
their sight of traditional origins, which is why I believe in using
eastern melodies mixed with modern beats.
Can you tell us about your new music releases & the new taste you have &
generally what are you planning in the future of your artist carrier?
Actually we are running a recording label named "Technical
Rotation" featuring "Alican
& Soner"
that is a top DJ in Turkey. So due to our last records, we are planning
to release our new album in September. This is the job that we were
planning on last year, but because some problems we had with some vinyl
companies who fell in deep problems, we decided to transform to a
digital format of recording & as many "Indi" labels, we made it possible
for downloading & working on the comments people send to us. Alican
& Soner and I,
have the same style of producing using - ableton live , so we
both have the vision of performing as a real music band (instrumental) &
I think this will lead us to the new generation of
electronic.
Most of the readers, are the Iranian communities, can you tell us how
much your familiar to this nations music activities?
Well,
I had many chances to meet Iranians playing different styles & different
instruments. I believe in our own genre some times it’s better to
continue in the undergrounds as the ambiance & the law rules the same.
You know when it's free & opened it will turn to more commercial, but
when it's underground it will stay more creative & professional.
We have lots of Iranians, playing & producing world wide & stars like,
"Sharam ", "Ali Dubfire " ( both from Deep dish ) , Behrouz
&… are originally Iranian, do you respect this community & do you
know more highlighted names from this nation?
Well,
I didn’t have the chance to meet any other professional names from Iran,
but I’m sure I will have the opportunity to be introduced to them in the
future & maybe see them at big festivals & events.
Thank you for your time, we appreciate if you have any messages for our
readers.
